Finance Assistant Job description

Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Permanent

In Finance, we play a major role in enabling the council to provide a full range of services to the people of Leicester and our internal employees by making sure they have the resources they need. From working directly with residents to collect rates, or advising on areas like housing benefits, to dealing with payments and receivables, we help to enrich people’s lives.

It’s full of fast-paced, dynamic, and varied work in our Business Service Centre. We bring together all financial operational and transactional services under one unit, including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash services, social care finance and housing revenue accounting functions. That means we constantly focus on the future, looking at how we can improve processes and find different approaches to deliver real value. So, join us and you’ll discover plenty of opportunities to shape the way we work and develop a rewarding career.

Based at Town Hall you can join us on a full time position on a permanent basis working 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll provide financial and administration support to managers and staff and undertake accurate and timely financial work within any of the teams. Your role at Leicester City Council is vital for the organisation, uniting with other departments to ensure smooth running of the business. You’ll assist with the financial transactional processes by inputting, interrogating, amending, and retrieving information from computerised systems. Whilst being a customer focused Finance Assistant you’ll liaise with both internal and external stakeholders, dealing with queries in a professional manner.

What you’ll need

A confident communicator, with strong numerical skills, you’ll be used to working in a financial team and using relevant systems to keep accurate records. So, you’ll have a thorough approach to your work, with the ability to write clearly, even when meeting strict deadlines. With the confidence to work on your own initiative, or as part of a team, you’ll be good at dealing with people at all levels and solving customer queries professionally.

With excellent communication skills you’ll respond to enquiries, e-mails and phone calls whilst being accurate when processing requests for payment, charging & billing, invoicing, and changes to details. As a team player you’ll work together to identify and resolve errors or discrepancies whilst agreeing resolutions and actions. As an enthusiastic and proactive individual you’ll be self-motivated and eager to learn and adapt in a fast paced and changing environment.

What we can offer you

As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You’ll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working. We’ll also give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise with a variety of training and development opportunities. In addition, you can choose from several flexible benefits, including discounts on city buses and trains. For an illustrative value of your benefits package, take a look at our benefits calculator.
